Federal Response to Threat of Asian Carp
The federal government has announced plans to protect the Great Lakes from the spread of Asian carp. These measures include
improving existing barriers along connecting waterways, conducting more frequent tests to track the presence of the invasive species,
and opening Chicago’s locks less frequently. The framework also calls for a study on the impacts of closing the locks permanently. Governors Doyle and Granholm from Wisconsin and Michigan were advocating for complete closure Monday at a White House summit to protect their fishing industries, while Illinois Governor Quinn opposed the idea, citing concerns for the Chicago shipping industry.
